Chapter 11
Work It Out
I love my life but it hasn’t always been easy. When I was out of rehab and trying to rebuild new foundations for my life, I felt isolated even though I was surrounded by people at work all day. I suppose we’ve all felt that way at some point. I just didn’t feel like I fit in anywhere. I wasn’t the type to go out to parties with people I barely knew and I didn’t want to stay at home every night either. More than anything, I craved a community of fun, wholesome people who were trying to figure out how to live out their lives and their faith in a genuine, engaged manner.
I knew enough about Young Life to know I liked the people in it. I had called Young Life’s main office to see if they needed any volunteers and, surprisingly, they said they did. They told me they were going to take kids to a camp in Canada called Malibu that summer and needed a couple female leaders to get to know the high school girls who would be going. It sounded like fun, so I told them I was in. I don’t think God maps out all of our destinations like it’s a highway. I think He gives us a direction, like it’s a path. Our part isn’t to figure out all of the steps, just to take the next one. I had just taken mine.
Young Life usually meets in people’s homes. They sent me to where Bob was leading because there weren’t enough leaders for the girls, and they thought I could help out. I went to the address they gave me and walked into a room full of high school kids with a couple leaders in front. All of my insecurities from when I was in high school came flooding back. Was I wearing the right stuff? Who would I meet? Where would I sit?
None of us fully grow out of all of our insecurities; we just learn how to manage them. Sometimes we do this by disguising them with titles or careers or activities; and while we rarely fool anyone else for long, we can fool ourselves for a short time.
Apparently, from what I learned later, I had caught Bob’s eye when I walked in. I was there to meet the high school girls sitting together on the carpet, not the guy up front who was in law school by day and volunteering by night. Don’t get me wrong, I thought Bob was a nice guy and all. He seemed kind of fun, full of energy, and bounced around like a character from a Disney movie. When I met him, there were no fireworks going off, no doves flying out from behind his back as he reached out his hand and said hello to me. I learned much later that to Bob, since we had just said hello to each other, this meant we were dating. Guys are funny that way.
